Bonus: If you are a publisher or author with ebook titles on Amazon that you would like Carolyn to review and comment on during the WEBcast, post a comment below with a link.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:

Best practices for optimizing your product descriptions, editorial reviews, and more.

Getting your books into the right categories and bestseller lists for maximum exposure.

How people make purchase decisions in an online environment.

What to do to make sure that readers are discovering your titles internally and externally.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

Trade publishers, authors, marketers, and online merchandisers interested in the Amazon Kindle marketplace.

In the trade, the digital transition has upended the marketplace, changing the entire publishing process. In academic publishing, the challenges of digital are no less seismic. Factors like piracy, a growing secondary market, and an environment that demands greater customization and speed to market present real tests to academic publishers. There are also great opportunities: ebooks, enhanced and otherwise, offer academic publishers a chance to make textbooks more relevant to students and—potentially—increase adoption rates. In this free WEBcast, Digital Textbooks: Innovations From the Academic Business Model, academic and trade publishers can learn from the lessons of big and small innovators at the forefront of digital.

We’ll talk to small start-ups and large publishers to find out how digital innovation has reshaped the academic marketplace.

Join us on Tuesday, August 9th at 1PM ET / 10 AM PT for this free WEBcast presented in partnership with Publishers Weekly and sponsored by Aptara.

How academic enhanced ebooks have added video, audio, and interactive features that go beyond bells-and-whistles publishing and improve the learning experience.

This WEBcast will primarily appeal to publishers in both academic and trade who are interested in new ways of selling and delivering content.

The DBW Roundtable is a live, interactive webcast featuring some of the most outspoken industry professionals gathering to discuss and debate the hottest publishing issues of today.

In this bi-weekly 1-hour WEBcast, the Roundtable offers insight into the greater book publishing ecosystem with actionable case studies from practitioners in publishing.

When a publisher creates a new digital product, they don’t have to reinvent the wheel. Bodies like BISG, NISO, the IDPF, and others endeavor to create agreed upon standards for identifiers, content, and coding languages that can give guidelines on product creation. However, the pace of implementation of new standards like HTML5 may seem painfully slow when compared to the rate of digital change.

In this special episode of the Roundtable, Laura Dawson, Content Chief at Firebrand Technologies, will engage in a conversation with Todd Carpenter, Managing Director of the National Information Standards Organization, on a number of issues surrounding standards.

Attendees will learn:

The main standards book publishers need to know about.

Why using standards is important for the shelf-life of your ebooks.

How you can start integrating standards into your publisher’s workflow (even when the final specification might not be complete)

On the agenda for the Roundtable:

Identifier standards (like ISBN and ISTC): Why are they important? What’s the status on ISBNs and ebooks? What’s the status on ISTC and ISNI?

Content standards (like ePub and HTML5): Why are they important? What’s the status on ePub 3? When will Kindle read ePub files? Why do you need to know about a web language like HTML5 if you’re in book publishing? Also, what about the elephant in the room: Adobe CS5?

Standards progress and the standards process: If HTML5 isn’t complete, how can Apple require it and ePub 3 include it? Can we use standards before they are ratified? Is that even possible? What are orphan standards that nobody adopts, and what happens then? What about de facto standards, like the Kindle format for ebooks?

Standards bodies: NISO, IDPF, BISG, GS1. Who are they and what do they do? Why do book publishers need to be acutely aware of their work?

This edition of the Roundtable will appeal especially to publishers involved with digital, managing editorial, production, operations, and editorial. This is not intended to be a highly technical presentation, but will offer high-level insight into the systems that shape your workflow.

This edition of the Roundtable will be broadcast on July 14th at 1 PM EST / 10 AM PST.

The digital transition in trade publishing presents new products that don’t fit neatly into old workflows. If publishers want to ensure simultaneous release of print, ebook, enhanced ebook or app, then they need lean, efficient processes. Effective workflows open up new opportunities in print as well – rush titles and repurposed books can provide fresh revenue with a timely release. In this free WEBcast, New Workflows for Editorial and Production, we’ll delve into the challenges and opportunities facing editors and production professionals today.

Join us on Tuesday, July 12th at 1 PM ET / 10 AM PT for this free WEBcast presented in partnership with Publishers Weekly.

Just some of the topics we’ll explore:

How new business models are changing how titles are produced, from acquisition to pub date: Short-form titles, enhanced products, rush books, and repurposed titles from backlist books present new challenges for editors and production professionals. What are some of the questions a publisher needs to ask when embarking on a publishing schedule that includes some of the above? How should you cope with the requirements these products require? What skillsets are needed on your staff to do this sort of work?

Setting up your publishing workflow so that editorial and production work smoothly together: What does a publisher have to do to ensure that enhanced ebooks, for example, can be released on schedule with print counterparts? When you have disparate media elements, how do you make them all come together?

Opportunities that arise from better workflows: Besides streamlining the creation of titles, great publishing workflows make it possible to create entirely new products. What are the opportunities presented by XML-first?

This WEBcast will primarily benefit publishers working in editorial, operations, and production.

DBW Roundtable: 6/30 | Topic: Improving What Publishers Release Into the Digital Marketplace

With ebooks selling more than all print copies combined in certain titles and genres, it’s clear that a title’s digital versions should receive the same attention and design as their print equivalents. But since Liza Daly’s 2009 presentation at Digital Book World, Getting Past “Good Enough” Ebooks, many problems remain in the ebook marketplace. In this edition of the Roundtable, we’ll dive deeply into the ebook landscape today and give positive examples on how to start producing better ebooks.

Among the topics the panel will explore:

What’s Wrong With Ebook Design Today? We’ll present a partial list of mistakes, miscalculations, and oversights that are appearing in professionally published ebooks today, and why they’re displeasing in the reader experience.

Best Practices for Ebooks Design: Panelists will suggest some better ways to do your ebooks – and how. Should your publisher be hosting an all hands meeting of your digital and managing editorial teams to set up best practices? How often should you revisit?

Skill Sets: Who do you need to hire or retrain in order to improve your processes? Should that person be coming from an editorial background (as was suggested in our Ebook Distribution for Small Publishers WEBcast with Publishers Weekly) or from a more technical production background? Is it a mixture of the two? What are some options for controlling costs? Who is doing good work in the field right now?

“Mistakes Were Made”: How do you prioritize fixing previously digitized content that is not optimized for the expectations of today’s consumer? How do you make sure your titles look good on devices that have entered the market since original conversion, and then future proof your books?

This edition of the Roundtable will appeal especially to publishers involved with digital, managing editorial, production, and editorial. This is not intended to be a highly technical presentation on book making, but an introduction into the types of problems that exist in ebooks from even the largest houses and how to go about fixing them.

This edition of the Roundtable was broadcast on June 30th at 1 PM EST / 10 AM PST. The next episode will air on July 14th at 1 PM EST / 10 AM PST.

Understand the Consumer’s experience. As a company executive, you should OWN many different devices, a Kindle, a Nook, an iPad, a Kobo Reader, and any other device you can get your hands on. You should be BUYING books from different retailers (all around the world), downloading them to your device or devices and READING them. BUY books from your own website and from the websites of other publishers. This is a relatively small investment of money compared with the insights you will receive in doing so…

Ask lot’s of dumb questions internally. Understand your internal processes. Understand why certain groups work differently than others. Understand what kinds of stresses and strains producing ebooks puts on your staff. Understand how production quality breakdowns occur. Understand how rights are managed.

What Men (and Women) Talk About When They Talk About Publishing (Part 2)
Don Linn, Bait ‘n’ Beer

Quality of the work (And let’s stop calling it ‘content’, dammit; “content” comes from boiler rooms…books come from the heart.) We are, at bottom, a creative business. We are fighting for share of mind against hundreds of alternatives and if we do not put our best foot forward with regard to the titles we acquire, the care we give to the editorial process, and to the production quality of both our print and digital books, we won’t (and don’t deserve to) survive and prosper. When I see a poorly conceived, apparently unedited or copy-edited, badly designed book, that is produced (whether in hardcover, paperback or in a digital edition) in what is obviously the cheapest possible way, I fear for our future. Resources are limited, but if we can’t produce consistent quality, then let’s reduce quantities until we can. Nobody wants to buy a bad product.

David Levithan [is one] of the masterminds that created the children’s series The 39 Clues, which weaves its story through 10 books, an online game, and trading cards. The first three books have more than 2.5 million copies in print, DreamWorks bought the movie rights, and the fourth title will be released in June.

LEVITHAN: “We want to find as many readers as possible and use technology to tell stories in different ways.

I’ve been following the first quarter earnings calls for media companies and retailers with great interest. There have been a number of statements made – from distributors talking about synergy and social media (also a recurring theme at the TV upfronts), to video game publishers discussing strengthening and extending their IP, to a softening of the studios’ public stance towards Netflix – that may suggest that a genuine paradigm shift in the creation and distribution of entertainment may be on its way.

I firmly believe that creating a viable business plan – a plan that fits logically with the content without compromising it – can be as much of a challenge when it comes to transmedia as creating the content itself. It’s also one of the most interesting points in my opinion as a creative person; if our transmedia projects make money, that means we will get to go on doing them and also get the opportunity to create new transmedia installments.
