By David Nussbaum || "The future can offer new opportunities, but it can also offer new threats every day."

By David Nussbaum, CEO, F+W Media, Inc.

These are incredibly exciting times to be a publisher as the hunger for good content is growing, and new technologies allow us to serve readers via numerous channels. Books are being read in print and on the web; on computers, smartphones, and a variety of mobile devices. Books are sold both in physical stores, and across web platforms. Innovative applications are being developed to expand the potential of books beyond the static page into interactive multimedia experiences.

Blogs, television shows and online communities are becoming books; and books are leading to blogs, television shows and web communities. Writers are publishers. Publishers are writers. Bookstores sell online and offline. Iconic technology companies are becoming booksellers.

And passionate communities are forming online, telling us exactly the kind of content they want to read, and in some cases, contribute.

We have more data, information, and feedback from readers than we’ve ever had before.

This can all be considered confusing. Hazy. The future can offer new opportunities, but it can also offer new threats every day.

And we at F+W Media, as book publishers ourselves, totally understand. How can we not, we face all the same issues that you do.

Clearly there is need for our community to come together, to focus on the issues, to share wins and losses, to offer networking opportunities, and to be a watercooler/big tent for all to gather — in person, and virtually.

Thus, Digital Book World is born.

We urge you to join us in this great quest. Come to our events. Participate in our online activities. Interact with your peers.

We believe in our industry and we believe in its future!

David Nussbaum is the CEO and Chairman of F+W Media, parent company of Digital Book World.

NEW YORK — January 27, 2010 –– Apple announcement anticipation and lively debate about eBook pricing and building communities of readers were hallmarks of day two of Digital Book World, a new conference presented by F+W Media at the Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers.

The conference closed with Guy LeCharles Gonzalez, Director of Programming and Business Development, who announced the new Digital Book World community at digitalbookworld.com in his closing remarks:

“There are no magic beans, bullets, or short cuts for the issues and challenges we face. There is a lot going on in our industry right now – too much to cover in two days – but we have the other 363 days of the year to work together.”

In addition to the annual conference, the Community offers seminars and WEBcasts focusing on professional development; a weekly interactive talk show, The Roundtable, addressing the hottest topics in publishing; and the inspirational 7X20X21 (Pecha Kucha) events.

Digital Book World differentiated itself from other book publishing conferences by focusing on content for the trade book community and creating conversation among industry professionals. It delivered on the promise of providing a venue for conversation. Lively debates in-session and online addressed the highly charged topic of eBook pricing, growing audiences for imprints as well as authors, and marketing to the born digital generation.

The next Digital Book World event is a one-day intensive workshop: Digitize Your Career: Real World Skills for the Future on April 15th in New York City. Additional details will be available at the newly relaunched digitalbookworld.com website.
