This holiday season, millions of readers will be unwrapping new tablets designed with ebooks in mind. With beautiful full-color screens, the Kindle Fire, Vox, and Nook Color offer publishers new ways to display their highly illustrated content. Publishers who have hesitated to make their highly illustrated print content available to consumers will undoubtedly want to start distributing widely, and those who have great ebooks in the marketplace today will most likely see a huge revenue boost this month.

But highly illustrated content is also one of the most difficult to design, format, and produce. In this free 1-hour WEBcast, we’ll talk with publishers, retailers, and experts with hands-on experience creating great color content.
Attendees Will Learn

Format considerations when producing complex ebooks – does a title require reflowable text or fixed layout and how does that change the publishing process?

What platform and retailer differences publishers need to keep in mind when planning a release strategy.

Basic overview of workflow and resources necessary to produce highly illustrated content.

How to ensure that your titles look their best on multiple devices.

What additional items do publishers need to watch out for when creating content for 7” ereading tablets, like the Nook, Kindle Fire, and Vox?

When should your publisher explore creating fixed-layout titles?

What sort of content displays best on tablets, and how can your content better exploit these screen.

How ereader tablets are opening up new digital revenue streams and new markets.

Tune in on November 22nd at 1 PM ET / 10 AM PT for the latest trends in online book marketing.

For publishers large and small, the library is a local, vocal, and active partner in book marketing and sales. With the close of Borders earlier this year, many communities are now underserved by bookstores, hampering readers ability to browse and discover new titles. In digital, as in print, libraries can act in what librarian Katie Dunneback calls “a low risk discovery channel,” so savvy publishers will want to maximize their ability to reach consumers through the library market.

In this 1-hour free WEBcast, we’ll explore the state of digital growth in libraries, marketing through the library channel, and new opportunities for reaching readers.

ATTENDEES WILL LEARN

Case studies in how libraries can build buzz for your titles – both online and off

How libraries can act as a “low risk” discovery channel (digital and otherwise)

What libraries are really looking for from publishers

What publishers can do to best utilize their library partners to build buzz for their titles

How to optimize your metadata and ebook files for the library market

Which digital products can a publisher deliver, including e-galleys, that can facilitate sales and marketing through libraries

What libraries do in terms of educating people on how to “read digitally.”

What are librarians doing to explain the often convoluted process of downloading and reading ebooks to people less familiar with devices?

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Publishers interested in increasing the discoverability of their titles in their frontlist and backlist.

Marketers looking for new audiences for their best titles.

Agents and authors exploring digital possibilities for their work.

This WEBcast aired on October 25th at 1 PM ET / 10 AM PT for the latest trends in online book marketing.

When your titles move off of book store tabletops, publishers are increasingly challenged to keep their titles top of mind. Luckily, smart ebook marketers are finding ways to build buzz, gain marketing traction, and ensure that books remain discoverable well beyond pub date. In this free WEBcast, “Ebook Marketing: New Skills and Fresh Opportunities” we will explore the opportunities that ebooks present for marketing your titles and how to optimize your titles for discovery. These tactics often fall into two silos: the “active” efforts done by publicists and marketers to make sure their titles hook an online browser through reviews and other media and the more “passive” effects of sound metadata strategy. Taken together, these approaches make great titles both desirable and findable.

We’ve assembled experts in marketing and metadata to show you how to get your ebooks in front of readers across all major retail channels and into the hands of fans.

ATTENDEES WILL LEARN

Tips and case studies in successful online marketing campaigns

How to connect with non-traditional markets during your publicity campaign, and how some publishers are breaking out of niche communities to reach a broad audience

Creating an authentic connection with readers through your marketing

How to optimize your title metadata to make sure readers can find it from the web and devices

What retailers are really looking for in your metadata

Top mistakes in publisher metadata that are costing them sales

How you can enhance your metadata to get picked up in search engines and storefronts

In the trade, the digital transition has upended the marketplace, changing the entire publishing process. In academic publishing, the challenges of digital are no less seismic. Factors like piracy, a growing secondary market, and an environment that demands greater customization and speed to market present real tests to academic publishers. There are also great opportunities: ebooks, enhanced and otherwise, offer academic publishers a chance to make textbooks more relevant to students and—potentially—increase adoption rates. In this free WEBcast, Digital Textbooks: Innovations From the Academic Business Model, academic and trade publishers can learn from the lessons of big and small innovators at the forefront of digital.

How academic enhanced ebooks have added video, audio, and interactive features that go beyond bells-and-whistles publishing and improve the learning experience.

This WEBcast will primarily appeal to publishers in both academic and trade who are interested in new ways of selling and delivering content.

They might be called cross-platform stories, transmedia projects, branded entertainment, or even alternate reality games, but, whatever you call them, at the heart of these new forms of entertainment is engagement across platforms. It’s hard to believe that the earliest “extended” experiences are now at least a decade old, and it can be difficult getting a handle on the full scope of what’s already come in the world of transmedia storytelling.

For this special StoryWorld WEBCast Michael Andersen, owner and senior editor at the Alternate Reality Gaming Network (ARGNet), will lead attendees through a tour of what’s possible with alternate reality games, cross-platform strategies, and transmedia storytelling. Michael’s goal is to introduce audiences to takeaways and tactics from transmedia storytelling projects, providing an in-depth analysis of a few key projects in addition to a broad overview of what specific industries have done to leverage existing networks and IPs, extend into new markets, and create meaningful connections with fans.

Join us on July 27th at 1 PM ET / 10 AM PT for this free WEBCast on What’s Possible with Transmedia: Case Studies in Successful Projects.

David Levithan [is one] of the masterminds that created the children’s series The 39 Clues, which weaves its story through 10 books, an online game, and trading cards. The first three books have more than 2.5 million copies in print, DreamWorks bought the movie rights, and the fourth title will be released in June.

LEVITHAN: “We want to find as many readers as possible and use technology to tell stories in different ways. From the beginning, we knew the story would encompass books, a Web site, and cards. It was minutely choreographed that we’d reveal 10 clues in print and 29 online.”

I’ve been following the first quarter earnings calls for media companies and retailers with great interest. There have been a number of statements made – from distributors talking about synergy and social media (also a recurring theme at the TV upfronts), to video game publishers discussing strengthening and extending their IP, to a softening of the studios’ public stance towards Netflix – that may suggest that a genuine paradigm shift in the creation and distribution of entertainment may be on its way.

I firmly believe that creating a viable business plan – a plan that fits logically with the content without compromising it – can be as much of a challenge when it comes to transmedia as creating the content itself. It’s also one of the most interesting points in my opinion as a creative person; if our transmedia projects make money, that means we will get to go on doing them and also get the opportunity to create new transmedia installments.
