In “Company Snapshots,” we pose a series of questions to leading providers of digital products and services and let them speak for themselves about what their company does, how they benefit publishers, and what they believe the biggest trends in the industry are. In today’s entry, we have Digimarc.
What does your company do?
Digimarc Guardian is an industry-leading solution for protecting, deterring piracy and asserting ownership of proprietary digital content, including copyrighted publications, documents and image assets. We enable some of the world’s most prominent publishers to protect their content wherever it appears across the web.
What’s unique about your company compared to your competitors?
Digimarc is a leading innovator in giving digital identity to all forms of media. Guardian brings this to the publishing industry in the form of uniquely trackable content, complementing that capability with automated web crawling, managed search services, and robust enforcement tools, creating a true end-to-end solution.
What’s the single biggest benefit your customers get from your service?
Guardian customers benefit from a solution which has been built for the book publishing industry from the ground up, with a focus on maintaining client integrity and reputation. In particular, our human validation process ensures that every single potential infringement is reviewed by trained personnel before enforcement action is taken. This high-touch service ensures that false positives are reduced to nearly nothing.
What’s the single biggest problem for your customers right now?
Understanding the true impact of piracy on the books industry—how it’s affecting publishers’ bottom lines and authors’ livelihoods. While studies that we have performed in concert with economics researchers and publishers have shown that our solutions significantly lift legitimate sales, the industry as a whole has not come together in order to fully understand and address these complex issues. We advocate for and can provide data in support of such endeavors, and are always interested in speaking with publishers about such opportunities.
What’s the single biggest opportunity for your customers right now?
Publishers are currently in a unique position to take control over the availability of their content online. By exploring new distribution methods, nascent e-commerce channels, and creating their own outlets for content—all the while keeping piracy at bay—they can reach consumers in all the right places.
What industry trends do you think will have the greatest impact on your customers over the next 24 months?
We’re witnessing steadily increasing interest in Guardian’s ability to embed unique identity into publisher content, especially as an alternative to traditional DRM, and anticipate that this will trend will continue. This approach enhances publishers’ ability to track and trace leaked material, provides valuable insight into the flow of digital piracy, and eliminates restrictions on how consumers access and share content across devices.
