Matt Harris’s company, LibreDigital, developed such a system called HARVEST.

Bookstores in France Dodge a Bullet in Trade Talks (New York Times)
France’s nearly 3,000 independent bookstores have withstood all manner of competition, including big chain stores and digital publishing. Their surival is mostly due to a 1981 law that allows publishers to set a fixed price for books, in stores and online. The practice is shared across much of Europe and was feared to be under threat in negotiations with the United States over the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, known as the T.T.I.P. Last month, that threat was taken off the table by the European Union’s chief negotiator, who stated unequivocally that fixed book pricing — or “le prix unique” in French — would not be a matter of debate.

IPG Membership Hits ‘Record High’ (Bookseller)
Membership of the Independent Publishers Guild has hit a “record high” of more than 600 companies which is “proof of the flourishing state of independent publishing in the UK at the moment,” the organization has said. According to the IPG, the number of members has been “steadily rising for several years now,” but this is the first time it has reached the 600 mark, due to a “flurry” of publishers signing up at the recent Frankfurt Book Fair.
Saudi Publishers Association: Politics ‘Distinct from Publishing’ (Pub Perspectives)
The 3rd Arab Publishers Conference, organized by the Arab Publishers Association and Emirates Publishers Association, took place at the Al Jawaher Reception and Convention Centre in Sharjah, UAE—just prior to the opening of this year’s Sharjah International Book Fair. This year’s theme was “Publishing Industry: Prospects and Challenges in the Digital Age,” and brought together a wide variety of international experts to address the gathering.
Amazon Publishing Announces Contest for Emerging Poets (DBW)
Amazon announced a new contest, Little A Poetry Contest, dedicated to discovering emerging poets. The company is soliciting poets who have published no more than one book of poetry. From November 2nd through December 20th, contestants can submit their full-length collections for consideration for the chance to win a prize of $5,000 as well as a publishing contract with a $2,000 advance from Little A, Amazon Publishing’s literary imprint.
Amazon Debuts Its Online Black Friday Deals Store (TechCrunch)
Expanding on the success of the Amazon-created sales holiday Prime Day earlier this year, Amazon announced it’s now launching a dedicated Black Friday Deals Store where Amazon Prime members will get early access to some of the best discounts. The Deals Store itself is open to all consumers, as the holiday shopping season begins with some early forecasts already predicting record numbers. However, the added bonus for Prime members is that they’ll be able to access over 30,000 “Lightning Deals” 30 minutes earlier than others.
