The multimedia subscription platform Playster is still in a beta phase, but the Montreal-based start-up is busy bulking up its catalog. A new partnership with the digital content distributor Findaway brings some 50,000 digital audiobooks to Playster’s offering.
The deal marks Playster’s first foray into audiobooks, rounding out a catalog that also offers ebooks, video, TV, games and other forms of entertainment media, for $15.95 a month.
In April Simon & Schuster added a selection of back-list ebooks to Playster’s platform, becoming the second Big Five publisher, after HarperCollins, to do so.
The audiobooks Playster now acquires through Findaway include titles already on the distributor’s AudioEngine, which offers audio content from the likes of Penguin Random House, HarperCollins and others.
Playster’s app will launch publicly later this summer, and when it does the subscription service will have ample competition. On just the audio front, Playster goes up against Scribd’s roughly comparable offering of 45,000 titles as of this spring, when Penguin Random House brought more than 9,000 titles to Scribd (which it added audibooks nearly eight months ago). And that’s not to mention other subscription competitors like Oyster or Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited and Audible programs.
Recent survey data suggests subscription audiobooks have a lead over subscription ebooks, but the income publishers are seeing from subscription-based content overall remains modest.
