How an Author Should Manage Social Media Marketing

All most authors want to do is write their book. Rarely do they want to actually market it, let alone use social media to do so.

One of the key reasons for this, according to Chris Syme in her latest DBW blog post, is that “social media marketing can be a big time suck for many authors. Making it manageable, though, is about learning how to take inventory of your time, resources and skill and then planning accordingly.”

“In this ever-increasing space,” Syme continues, “there are plenty of tools, apps and systems available to help you organize your time better, but sometimes it’s difficult to decide which fits your needs best.”

To help authors better manage their time, Syme breaks down the five factors they must use to decide which tools are appropriate, as well as the five tasks that require the most time.

NYT Expose Has Little Effect on Amazon Shoppers (AdAge)
According to YouGov BrandIndex, which tracks the “buzz” consumers are hearing about brands, Amazon’s brand perception plummeted 60 percent after the New York Times expose made the rounds. But that drop does not seem to be resulting in less business, as 70 percent of consumers surveyed said they would consider shopping at Amazon next time they wanted to make a purchase from a retail store, down from 72 percent before the story was broke.

After Amazon “flamed out with critics and consumers last year in its first attempt at a smartphone,” the company has “has dismissed dozens of engineers who worked on its Fire phone at Lab126” in recent weeks. The layoffs were the first in the division’s 11-year history. Amazon has also scaled back or outright stopped some of Lab126’s more ambitious projects, including a large-screen tablet, and reorganized the division, combining two hardware units into one.

Are Tablets Affecting Children’s Ability to Read? (Guardian)
Four years ago, just 7 percent of 5- to 15-year-olds in the UK had access to a tablet. By last year, the figure had jumped to 71 percent. Some 34 percent of this age group even owned the tablets themselves, as well as 11 percent of 3- to 4-year-olds. The popularity of tablets among children can be a controversial topic: are these devices distracting children from more traditional activities, such as reading?

Large Tablets Are About to Take Off (TechCrunch)
According to a new report by research firm Strategy Analytics, “shipments of large tablets will jump 185 percent year-over-year in 2015.” The firm “believes that enterprise sales (as well as consumer purchases of two-in-one tablets to replaces PCs) will continue to fuel sales of large tablets over the next four years, with shipments almost doubling to 19.3 million units, or a seven percent share of the total tablet market, in 2019.”

Opportunities in Mexico for Digital Growth (DBW)
In a press release, the Frankfurt Book Fair announced that the Global Publishing Summit 2015, the new conference set to kick off the Fair, will focus on seven international book markets, which will be introduced by industry experts and analyzed from various points of view. Included in the list is Mexico, “which currently lacks bookstores and libraries, efficient tax regulations for exports and imports, support for reading and, above all, readers.”

Along with the cover, a book title “is the first thing a potential reader sees, and can be the deciding factor between hitting the buy button or not.” So BookBub sifted through its data and organized by category the most popular words used to name books. The words represent the most commonly used words in each genre, not the best-selling.
