Simon & Schuster Partners With U.S. Military Academy for Series on Military History

The U.S. Military Academy and Simon & Schuster team up for a series on military history

In collaboration with the U.S. Military Academy, Simon & Schuster and Rowan Technology Solutions announced today that they will publish a series of books on military history, The West Point History of Warfare. North American rights were acquired by Vice President and Senior Editor Thomas LeBien from Eric Lupfer and Eric Simonoff, WME Entertainment.

The West Point History of the Civil War will be the first volume in a series of definitive West Point military history works that Simon & Schuster and Rowan Technology Solutions will publish exclusively. The first volume will be available in both print and enhanced digital formats on October 21, 2014, and the introduction will be written by Colonel Ty Seidule, Head of the Department of History at West Point. The next volumes will include The West Point History of World War II and The West Point History of the American Revolution.

The U.S. Military Academy is the gold standard for military history and the operational art of war. West Point has a saying, “Much of the history we teach is made by the people we taught.” Since 1847, West Point has published and frequently updated the definitive textbook on military history for its cadets. Through a unique partnership with Rowan Technology Solutions, an education technology startup created by West Point graduates, The West Point History of Warfare has undergone a complete revision, three years in the making, including thousands of original tactical maps and newly-commissioned chapters by leading experts. Simon & Schuster will now make these richly illustrated and commanding works available, making it possible for the general public to study the same curriculum as the country’s future General Lees, Grants, and Eisenhowers.

The West Point History of the Civil War combines the expertise of preeminent historians commissioned by West Point, hundreds of tactical maps uniquely created for West Point by a team of cartographers, and hundreds of images, many created for this volume or drawn from West Point archives. For two years it has been beta-tested, vetted, and polished by cadets, West Point faculty, and West Point graduates. On publication there will be no more authoritative or informed military history of its kind available anywhere. Offering careful analysis of the political context of military decisions, the book is singularly brilliant at introducing the generals and officer corps of both Union and Confederacy, while explaining the tactics, decisions, and consequences of individual battles and the ebb and flow of the war.
