UPDATE: Inside Digital Book World 2014: News & Highlights is no longer available as a free download, but it can be purchased for $5.99 here.
One of the most memorable moments of Digital Book World 2014 for me was when The Everything Store author (and avowed “Bezos-ologist”) Brad Stone took the stage to try to make sense of Amazon for publishers in the audience.
He said something I remember reading in his book but it really stuck with me after watching nearly 1,500 publishers in the audience react. He reminded the publishers in the audience that, “Amazon views publishers as ‘sickly’ gazelles and itself as a cheetah.”
It’s a visceral image, one that imagines the staid and dignified business of creating and distributing books as a bloodbath.
There were so many things like this at Digital Book World 2014 for me. So, considering my porous memory, I thought it best that we create something to remember all these moments.
I’m writing now to introduce Inside Digital Book World 2014: News & Highlights. You can download the book for free for the next month or so; afterwards it will retail for $5.99. It’s 90+ pages of news, insights, charts, graphs, images and analysis from the DBW conference. If you were at Digital Book World, it’s a great way to remember your time there (or see if we included you in our many pages of photos). If you missed the conference, it gives you some idea of all the great information and insights you’ll get should you decide to attend next year.
It also features original illustrations by New York-based engineer Dan Turk, imagining Amazon as Brad Stone’s cheetah and publishers as sickly gazelles:
