Smashwords just announced a distribution agreement with Flipkart, India’s largest online retailer and bookseller. Flipkart serves approximately 9.6 million customers, including 1 million daily visitors and offers products in 17 categories. India represents the fifth largest source of traffic to the Smashwords store after the US, UK, Canada and Australia.
Flipkart representatives point to Nielsen BookScan Retail Panel data, which states that Flipkart holds 80% market share for online book sales in India and holds 40-45% market share for all trade book sales across physical stores and online. Smashwords titles will begin appearing at Flipkart.com in the next 3-4 weeks.
