Simon & Schuster’s Atria Poaches HarperCollins Editor Dawn Davis for New Imprint

Simon & Schuster division Atria has developed a reputation for shrewdly acquiring the works of self-published authors. The direction and strategy of its new imprint, led by former HarperCollins editor Dawn Davis, is not yet determined.

NEW YORK, February 14—Dawn Davis will join the Atria Publishing Group, a division of Simon & Schuster, where she will be Vice President and Publisher of a new, yet-to-be-named imprint. The news of Ms. Davis appointment and the creation of the new publishing imprint were announced by Judith Curr, Atria Group President and Publisher, to whom Davis will report.
The new imprint will draw on Ms. Davis’s strengths as an editor and publisher, with a list that will encompass the best in literary fiction, narrative nonfiction, journalism, memoirs and pop culture, and drawn from a wide range of authors of all backgrounds. Ms. Davis’s first day at Simon & Schuster will be April 1.

Ms. Davis comes to Atria from HarperCollins, where she had been for twelve years, first as Editorial Director of Amistad/ Executive Editor of HarperCollins and most recently as Publisher of Amistad. During her time at Amistad, she published numerous well-known, highly- acclaimed bestselling authors including Edward P. Jones, author of THE KNOWN WORLD, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, National Book Critics Circle and IMPAC Awards for Fiction; Steve Harvey, author of the bestsellers STRAIGHT TALK, NO CHASER and ACT LIKE A LADY, THINK LIKE A MAN, which launched a #1 box office film and talk show; Chris Gardner, whose life story THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS was the inspiration for the popular motion picture starring Will Smith; and Attica Locke, author BLACK WATER RISING, a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and the Edgar Award.
Prior to Amistad, Ms. Davis held editorial positions at Vintage Books and The New Press.
