More Nook Discounts from Barnes & Noble: Two-For-One Ebook Giveaway

Print Friendly

In the past few months, Barnes & Noble has instituted a series of aggressive discounts and giveaways on Nook devices and digital content, including:

Giving away its lowest-level model Nook e-reader with the purchase of a Nook HD+ tablet

Making certain paid Nook apps free on Fridays

Giving away e-readers in the UK to promote literacy

Free ebooks exclusive to the Nook Windows 8 app

Discounts associated with the March Madness basketball tournament (B&N partnered on a “tournament of books”)

Special discounts and events for teachers

$50 of free content with the purchase of a Nook HD+

More free content with purchase of Nook HD+

Buy one Nook ebook (in store), give another away for free (this promotion made B&N the first ebook retailer to give away front-list titles in the post-agency-pricing era)

Many of these promotions were launched after it came to light that Barnes & Noble had a very disappointing holiday quarter selling Nook devices and ebooks.

  1. It’s too bad that NOOK Press has turned out to be a dud out the starting gate. Anyone wanting to use their service to reach Barnes & Noble is bound for a huge disappointment if they read the terms of service and publishing agreement. I did, and decided to opt out in the end. NOOK Press wants to assume all control over the ebooks published through them, including dictating to authors what price to charge, restricting them to domestic distribution only, and also telling them they cannot engage in the same promotions everyone else does. They also stress that they alone can decide whether an ebook gets given away, without compensation to the author. In addition, they want to sell the books with DRM attached. With terms like these, is it any wonder everyone is staying with Smashwords? It’s virtually the same as Amazon, which I don’t care to deal with either. I would rather sell from my site alone rather than deal with companies which do not care about their suppliers or maintaining good relations with them.
