Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Vibal Publishing Partner to Support a New Generation of Learners in the Philippines
Education leaders join forces to provide standards-aligned quality content and engaged learning, adapted for local students
BOSTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Global education leader Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) today announced a new partnership with Vibal Publishing House, Inc., the Philippines’ leading publisher of educational materials. Through this partnership, Vibal will reprint and exclusively distribute HMH’s Journeys, GO Math! and ScienceFusion programs in the region.
“This announcement marks the first step in a growing collaboration between two education leaders, with the ultimate goal of significantly improving educational outcomes for the Philippines’ learners of today and leaders of tomorrow”
The three-year agreement, which marks HMH’s first comprehensive partnership within the Philippine market, also licenses Vibal to adapt each program to fit specific market needs, including co-branding content. Through this collaboration, HMH’s quality, results-driven content will become available to over 600,000 students within the Philippines’ private school market over the three-year term.
“This announcement marks the first step in a growing collaboration between two education leaders, with the ultimate goal of significantly improving educational outcomes for the Philippines’ learners of today and leaders of tomorrow,” said Mark Short, Senior Vice President, International Markets at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. “Through flexible and strategic partnerships such as this one, HMH is expanding the reach and impact of its quality education content to an even broader global audience.”
Integrating US Common Core State Standards coverage into every lesson, HMH’s Journeys is a K-6 reading program which features comprehensive instruction across four key strands: Reading including Foundational Skills; Writing; Speaking and Listening; and Language. Students engage with a variety of rich, complex texts on a daily basis through close reading, performance tasks, and writing opportunities, encouraging discussion, analysis, and critical thinking.
Similarly, GO Math! is a focused program for K-8 students designed to meet the objectives of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. Using a unique write-in, interactive student edition at every grade, students represent, solve, and explain—all in one place. The author team for GO Math! consists of mathematics educators and school district personnel and includes representation from the leadership of the US National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
ScienceFusion is a comprehensive, state-of-the-art science program for K-8 students, aligned to the US Next Generation Science Framework, which gives students a meaningful way to interact with science. Rather than simply reading about science concepts, ScienceFusion challenges students to think critically and make informed decisions based on the information they have been taught across print, digital, and hands-on resources.
“We are delighted to partner with HMH on this exciting venture that will help us to lead the way in education throughout the Philippines,” said Gaspar A. Vibal, President and CEO of the Vibal Group. “This strategic partnership will allow us to incorporate a more global perspective, while aligning to the Philippine K-12 curriculum. We have also commissioned leading academics to help us tailor HMH’s best-in-class materials to the local market and to the lives of Filipino students.”

In the Philippines, the name Vibal is synonymous with textbooks. It is the country’s largest educational publisher, accounting for 60% market share in the public school sector and 40% share in the private school market. In 2011, the company expanded its portfolio to include e-books or electronic versions of its printed textbooks, thereby emerging as a leading proponent of digital education in the Philippines. Other technology products it launched include the country’s first interactive ePub 3.0 e-textbooks, an e-reading mobile app, the Philippines’ first commercial e-bookstore, and an offline/online learning management system. Last year, it also launched the Vibal Global Education project which involves partnerships with American publishers – notably Houghton Mifflin Harcourt – an initiative that will see popular textbook titles produced by the American publisher getting locally adapted and aligned with the Philippines’ K to 12 curriculum.
