Ebook Publisher Power Rankings: Hachette No. 1 in 2013

It’s a great feat for a publisher to have even one book make a best-seller list. Below is a list of the publishers who have made the Digital Book World Ebook Best-Seller List in the first quarter of 2013 — and how many times they’ve each made the list.

The big story this year is Hachette. Driven by the success of series like Beautiful Creatures, some 27% of all books on the list so far this year have been titles from Hachette.

Random House and Penguin are not far behind with 87 titles and 42 titles, respectively. Combined, Penguin Random House has published roughly 40% of all ebook best-sellers this year.

Just behind Random-Penguin is the big surprise: self-published titles. In the first 13 weeks of the year, 22 self-published titles have hit the best-seller list (7% of all titles), including two No. 1 spots.

In addition to ranking by appearances, I decided for this iteration of the list to give some weight to appearing higher up on the list. It’s obviously better to be No. 1 on the list than No. 25. The “points” column is a sort of weighted ranking. I gave each No. 1 ranked ebook 25 points, No. 2, 24 points, No. 3, 23 points and so on. When we look at the list this way, not much changes: Scholastic and Macmillan swap spots; Simon & Schuster leapfrogs Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Harlequin jumps over them both; and Workman climbs out of the basement to No. 12, pushing everything else one space down.
