Fall may be the season of big publishers.
The heavy-hitters include Veronica Roth (Allegiant, HarperCollins, No. 1), John Grisham (Sycamore Row, Penguin Random House, No. 2), Stephen King (Doctor Sleep, Simon & Schuster, No. 8) and Lee Child (Never Go Back, Penguin Random House, No. 15). And there are others.
Lower-priced back-list titles from big publishers are also crowding out others from the list, including blockbuster Hollywood release-supported Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card (from Macmillan for $3.98) and last year’s hit Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn (from Penguin Random House for $4.99).
Penguin Random House is leading the onslaught with nearly half of the books on this week’s best-seller list from the world’s largest publisher.
Could it be that self-published authors and small presses will have more success getting on to ebook best-seller lists during times of the year when there are lulls between big releases from big publishers? Or is it just that big publishers have further honed their abilities in driving ebook sales? Or perhaps these three week have been an anomaly of a sort and we’ll see indie titles hit the list again soon? Only time will tell.
Meanwhile, the average price of a best-selling ebook ticked up again to $8.62 from $8.53. It seems likely that as long as indie authors and smaller publishers are off the list, it could stay where it is, if not go higher. We’ll have to wait and see just how retailers handle the first holiday season when they have full control over ebook discounting for all the major publishers.
