Barnes & Noble Announces More Content Deals for Nook in Continuing Marketing and Discounting Blitz

Print Friendly

In two concurrent press releases, Barnes & Noble announced two more deals to coincide with what has been a full-court-blitz in marketing and discounting its Nook devices and digital content.

Barnes & Noble will be giving away ebooks and digital magazines to those who download the Nook app for Windows 8. For a limited time, those who download the app will get to select five free books and five free magazine issues from a limited list, which includes titles like Life of Pi by Yann Martel (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) and Blue Bloods by Melissa De La Cruz (Hyperion).

Barnes & Noble will also be sponsoring a March madness-style “tournament of books” that  pits individual titles against each other in a bracketed competition until one winner emerges. Nook will be offering discounts on books featured in the tournament, pricing them starting at $2.99, including titles like The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller (HarperCollins) and The Financial Lives of the Poets by Jess Walter (HarperCollins). The promotion will run through March 29.

Following rumors of the discontinuation of the Nook line of devices and ever since it has come to light through Barnes & Noble’s financial disclosures that the Nook Media division was underperforming due to very weak holiday device sales, the company has been offering deep discounts on devices and content.

First, the company offered a $50 credit to buy content for Nook HD+ buyers. There has been the Friday paid app giveaway, where the company gives consumers a paid app for free each Friday. The company is also giving consumers a free Nook Simple Touch e-reading device with every purchase of a Nook HD+ tablet computer for a limited time.

In addition to offering discounts on devices and content, the company announced that it would be cutting costs at the division in its recent quarterly report.

March Madness at NOOK®: Announcing Special Limited Time NOOK Book™ Deals to Coincide with the Tournament of Books

NOOK-Sponsored Tournament Features Bracket-Style Competition with Popular Books Going Head-to-Head Until One Is Crowned the Winner

NOOK Media LLC, a subsidiary of Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS), the leading retailer of content, digital media and educational products, is offering a special limited time deal on select NOOK Books to coincide with the annual Tournament of Books. The competition, in which two works of fiction from 2012 go head to head each day, is run by The Morning News (www.themorningnews.org/tob), an online magazine of essays, art and humor. It features judges and publishing industry experts picking a winner each day until one book is crowned the champion. The Tournament of Books NOOK offer features discounted bestselling titles from competing authors and judges, including The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller, The Financial Lives of the Poets by Jess Walter, Ticknor by Sheila Heti and more, available in the NOOK Store™ starting at just $2.99. The offer runs until Friday, March 29. For more information, customers can visit Bn.com/tournamentofbooks.

“We’re excited to sponsor this year’s Tournament of Books because it’s an innovative way to help fans to interact and get excited about some of the best works of fiction from the previous year,” said Jim Hilt, Vice President of eBooks at NOOK Media LLC. “Through our NOOK Book offer, we are generating more excitement about the tournament by offering customers many of the featured authors’ and judges’ books at even lower prices on NOOK devices and through NOOK.com.”

“From the beginning, NOOK by Barnes & Noble was a natural fit for us as a presenting sponsor of the Tournament of Books,” said Rosecrans Baldwin, co-founder of the Tournament of Books. “At the most basic level, the event celebrates discovering excellent new works of fiction. Barnes & Noble’s passion for new literature, whether it’s in the Barnes & Noble Review or the Discover Great New Writers program, seemed to just match with why we started the Tournament in the first place.”

The tournament, now in its ninth year, starts out with 16 great works of fiction. Each day, two books go head to head with the winner decided by different judges within the publishing industry. Along the way, each judge reveals his or her biases and interests, any connections they have to the participating authors, and, most importantly, how they decided between the two books. Just like the NCAA Basketball Tournament, the Tournament of Books throws up bracket-busting shocks and surprises. In the opening round of this year’s tournament, National Book Critics Circle award-winner Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk by Ben Fountain was taken out by A.M. Homes’s May We Be Forgiven, while in the quarterfinal round, Hilary Mantel’s Booker Prize-winner Bring Up the Bodies was knocked out by Sheila Heti’s How Should a Person Be? – causing much debate among the tournament’s ardent followers.

This year’s tournament is now in its final days, and after two intense weeks of competition the “final four” are The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, which squares off with Chris Ware’s Building Stories, and The Orphan Master’s Son by Adam Johnson, which takes on Gillian Flynn’s bestselling Gone Girl. The champion will be revealed on Friday, March 29, having been chosen in a vote cast by all of the judges involved in the competition. Fans can visit Bn.com/tournamentofbooks or TheMorningNews.org/tob on Friday to find out the winner of the 2013 Tournament of Books.

For information on the award-winning line of NOOK tablets and readers, customers can go to www.nook.com or visit the NOOK Digital Shops™ and displays in any of Barnes & Noble’s nearly 700 bookstores. Barnes & Noble offers Always Free NOOK Support in all of its neighborhood bookstores, with more than 35,000 NOOKsellers across the country ready to assist customers with setting up their NOOK devices or choosing their next great read.
