Avg. Ebook Best-Seller Price Spikes as Big Publishers Crowd Out Indie Hits

Print Friendly

Entwined_with_YouThis week’s average ebook best-seller price is nearly $9.00 thanks to a preponderance of successful digital titles from traditional houses.

In fact—Hachette, Macmillan, Penguin, HarperCollins, Random House and Simon & Schuster—all six of the big six, have titles on DBW’s ebook best-seller list this week. By contrast, only one self-published title ranks in the top 25 on this week’s ebook best-seller list. And, independently published ebooks remain in the minority until we reach the under $3.00 list.

The average price of an ebook best-seller this week is $8.92, up sharply from $6.95 last week. The nearly $2.00 increase is the largest spike observed since we started tracking the average price of a best-seller last summer.

Another story line from this week is Sylvia Day. The latest book in her Crossfire series, Entwined With You, jumped to No. 1 this week on the strength of a million pre-sales. The series to date has sold about nine million copies, she told Digital Book World in an interview several weeks ago. Due to increased overall interest in the series from its latest installment, two other Crossfire books are now also in the top 25: Bared to You (No. 15) and Reflected in You (No. 20).
