Amazon Scores Ebook Best-Seller Hits With Hangman’s Daughter Ebooks

the poisoned pilgrimThis week, it’s Amazon’s turn to dominate the ebook best-seller charts. It has two titles in the top ten and three in the top twelve, all Hangman’s Daughter books by Oliver Pötzsch.

When Amazon launched its publishing operation in 2011 and 2012 — first in Seattle and then in New York — hopes were high among its early authors and other publishers were scared that the leading book retailer in the world would favor its own titles above theirs and book sales would sag for anyone publishing under another imprint.

Fast-forward to 2013 and those hopes have been somewhat dashed and those fears somewhat dispelled as Amazon has had struggles in the publishing business. It was unable to make Tim Ferris’s latest title a best-seller despite much saber-rattling from the author around his move to Amazon. Sales for its other big books haven’t wowed yet, either, notably Penny Marshall’s My Mother Was Nuts.

However, due to an aggressive pre-sale of the upcoming Pötzsch title The Poisoned Pilgrim: A Hangman’s Daughter Tale, things are looking up. The book doesn’t hit shelves until July but Amazon offered it for $0.99 at the end of last week*, shooting it to No. 1. After a day-long sale, the price was raised to $7.99 and then lowered again to $4.99. It all adds up to the No. 2 best-selling ebook this past week behind the latest Penguin Harlan Coben release, Six Years, which just hit the market.

Amazon propelled the two other Pötzsch titles up the list with similar one-day $0.99 sales. Currently, the books are tracking in the upper reaches of the top-100 on best-seller lists at their original prices, so we don’t expect to see them on the list again next week.

In other news, The Hunger Games Trilogy has dropped off the best-seller list as its $5.00 sale has come to an end. And, the average price of a best-selling ebook shot up by $0.44 cents this week to $7.84 after hitting an all-time-low last week of $7.40.

Last, after an amazing two-week run as the first self-published author to top the ebook best-seller list, Jennifer L. Armentrout’s Wait for You (penned under the name J. Lynn) fell to No. 3. Armentrout, however, likely doesn’t mind, as she signed a six-figure deal for the book and two others with HarperCollins last week.

* The book appears as $4.99 on our list because that’s the lowest price it was available for the period that we measured. It was on sale for $0.99 the day before this week’s cycle began.
