Building audience participation before the writing and publication of a book is a way to help readers discover new work, according to Sourcebooks CEO Dominique Raccah speaking on a panel of publishing CEOs this morning at the Digital Book World Conference this morning. Sourcebooks is embarking on such an experiment right now.

“We’re going to develop the book and build a community [around it] and the community is going to influence how the book is developed,” said Raccah. “At the end of the process, you get a book.”

Raccah referenced social media tools as a way to build and engage with that community, but did not offer specific details on the project, including what the book is about and when it is coming out. Sourcebooks is partnering on the project with author and futurist David Houle, who is also speaking at the Digital Book World Conference tomorrow. (Digital Book World is owned and operated by F+W Media, as is DigitalBookWorld.com.)

Raccah also personally invited some 1,000 publishing executives who were in the audience to participate in the community book project.

The CEO panel was moderated by F+W Media chairman and CEO David Nussbaum. Hyperion CEO Ellen Archer, Ingram Industries chairman John Ingram, Yale University Press director John Donatich were also on the CEO panel.

UPDATE: Sourcebooks has put out a press release on the new initiative. See it here.

  1. Agile model helps its clients to remain unconfined to some specific tasks entirely, and thereby allows them to participate in the overall development process of their business, which is an essential need of a successful business.
