“Your history is not a guarantee of your future,” said F+W chairman and CEO David Nussbaum to kick off the Digital Book World 2012 Conference and Expo.

SONY invented the Walkman and changed the music industry forever. The company, a huge electronics conglomerate that owned pieces all along the music supply chain, was not to control the industry’s future, said Nussbaum.

That honor fell to Apple, which changed everything again with the invention of the iPod and iTunes. The rest is history; an instructive example for the book publishing industry, which is going through massive changes all its own.

Digital Book World (disclosure: owned and operated by F+W Media, as is DigitalBookWorld.com) exists to address this change, according to Nussbaum. The book publishing industry’s long, storied past will not guarantee it a future.
