Qloo: Another New Book Discovery Platform

[Press Release]

Discovery Platform Qloo Launches to Change the Way People Explore Culture

The new invitation-only platform empowers members to discover new places and things based on everything they already love

Cultural discovery platform Qloo launched today to provide personalized suggestions across eight categories: music, film, TV, dining, nightlife, fashion, books and travel. By exploring the relationship between different areas of culture, Qloo empowers members to discover new things and places based on everything they already love.

“We want to empower our members to decide which aspects of their taste are most relevant every time they search”

Launched in private alpha in April 2012, Qloo takes a member’s current taste across the eight categories and identifies the most culturally like-minded individuals on the platform—one’s “TasteBuds”—from whom suggestions are then sourced by Qloo’s unique algorithm.

“We want to empower our members to decide which aspects of their taste are most relevant every time they search,” said Alex Elias, CEO of Qloo. “This stems from our belief that there are meaningful relationships between a person’s taste in different areas of culture. For some people, their taste in music may have something to do with their taste in fashion. For others, there might be a link between literature and film, or restaurants and hotels.”

Qloo goes beyond sites that aggregate recommendations solely on one’s social graph or anonymous reviews. The platform introduces members to new things based on their current taste in any or all categories, creating a new form of cross-cultural intelligence. Qloo members can decide which aspects of their taste are most relevant every time they seek suggestions. For example, members can choose to discover fashion based on their taste in music, or find a film based on their taste in literature and travel.

“I was drawn to Qloo because it brings a collection of things I’m passionate about together,” said Danny Masterson, investor and actor. “I travel a lot and knowing where to go in a new city is always challenging. I’m really excited that now I can source suggestions for new restaurants and bars based on my taste in music or fashion.”

Qloo was founded by Alex Elias, a founder and principal of Hedge Fund, APE Capital, and Jay Alger, co-founder and CEO of digital agency, Deepend. The company’s investors include Kindler Capital and individuals such as Cedric the Entertainer and Danny Masterson. The advisory board includes Jason Calacanis and Duncan Quinn. Qloo is based in New York City and has a team of ten people including chief technology officer, Mike Diolosa, and chief design officer, Iti Sakharet.
