At a secret event in Los Angeles today, Microsoft unveiled a new 10.6 inch tablet dubbed Surface.

There had been speculation that Microsoft might be announcing a new Nook-branded tablet running Windows software or a similar Xbox-branded tablet.

Surface features a high-definition display, USB and micro SD card slots, a kickstand and a keyboard and trackpad, giving it more interface options than its Apple rival, the new iPad.

According to the Wall Street Journal, “The Surface tablet is 9.3 millimeters thick and weighs 1.5 pounds, which is similar to Apple’s iPad.”

No news yet on what the books focus for the new tablet will be.
