Ingram’s VitalSource® simplifies e-textbook integration and adds
learning outcome support tools through IMS LTI v1.1 conformance
NASHVILLE, TN – As more institutions implement sophisticated online learning programs for faculty and students, Vital Source®, the leading provider of e-textbook solutions in education, today announced their conformance certification for IMS Global Learning Consortium’s Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) v1.1 with learning outcomes, a widely-used global technical standard for educational applications.
“The LTI standards from IMS create great opportunity,” said Kent Freeman, Chief Operating Officer, Vital Source Technologies, Inc. “Becoming LTI v1.1 certified will help more institutions, faculty, students and publishers take full advantage of all that the platform has to offer. We look forward to continuing our work with IMS and furthering the impact technology is having in education.”
Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) provides a common way to plug applications into learning management software and learning platforms. The LTI standard, and VitalSource’s achievement of LTI v1.1 certification, has simplified the way that learning management systems interact with the e-textbook platform. Using LTI standards, more institutions can easily integrate the VitalSource platform into their curriculums.
LTI standards replace custom API’s (application programming interfaces) required for each platform, reducing the number of custom integrations required for developers, learning platforms and IT support staff. LTI provides a quick and secure way to integrate innovative content and learning applications for seamless access by students and teachers. The comprehensive standards handle launching, single sign-on authorization and provides VitalSource with comprehensive outcome support tools to help feed valuable and relevant data back to institutions from the newest generation of interactive books.
“LTI v1.1 is a major step forward for students, faculty and administrators because it sets up a path for usage and progress data to be transferred from the e-textbook application,” said Dr. Rob Abel, Chief Executive of IMS. “This makes e-books a much more appealing option in education and it is great having VitalSource take a major leadership role in making this a reality across the industry.”
Vital Source, a member of IMS, has an active role in the development of tools to improve educational participation and attainment. With more than 2 million users, VitalSource is the most used e-textbook platform in education today. With a presence on more than 6,000 campuses in 180 countries, educators and students have access to tens of thousands of titles from the world’s leading textbook publishers.
