Increasingly, Schnittman said in an interview with Digital Book World at Book Expo America this past June, publishing companies are finding that they have the expertise in-house to do many of the things that they did not know how to do even just a few years ago, software development projects chief among those things.
Today, Hachette and other publishers are deciding whether they or outside developers are best equipped to handle software project and that decision is very new in his experience, Schnittman said. And this expertise helps publishers adapt and compete.
“To be nimble, you have to know what you’re doing,” he said.
And in the e-book era, being nimble could be the difference between life and death for a publisher.
