Ebook Best-Sellers $3.00 to $7.99 Week Ending 12-1-12
Life of Pi (by Yann Martel, from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) continues to lead the mid-priced ebook pack. The title continued with strong sales after a price drop at Amazon to $4.99. The book costs nearly twice as much at Barnes & Noble ($9.99). With a book like this — a specific title that is popular today because of an upcoming film — price may not have a huge effect on sales since consumers seeking out the book won’t want a substitute, meaning that it should be rather price inelastic. However, it could be that consumers who discover the title through the movie tie-in decide to buy it more often when it has a lower price.
That said, all week last week, Life of Pi hovered in the low teens in the Kindle rankings and in the high 20s and low 30s at Barnes & Noble — so maybe price is affecting sales.
