Alibaba, the dominant Chinese search engine, is launching a bookselling site through subsidiary Tmall.com, according to ChinaDaily.com.

The new service will go head-to-head with Amazon in China as well as local operators with 1.3 million titles from around 1,000 online booksellers.

According to ChinaDaily, Alibaba’s aggressive expansion into multiple business-to-consumer website channels has caused cutthroat competition to erupt among competitors. Industry observers expect the same out of this latest move.

Industry analysts say that local player Dangdang has a 29.4% of the Chinese online book-buying market and Amazon China currently has 27.5%.
