In this exclusive interview, Bob Miller, Group Publisher at Workman Publishing, discusses the continued importance of their physical and print backlist titles, how the company extends their lives through revisions and marketing, and long-term strategies to navigate verticals and manage risk.
From the interview:
To the extent that there are now 51 books in the Workman backlist that have each sold more than a million copies–these are all books that started very small. So, it’s just relentless belief in a book, taking the time to make it the best book in the category, and then not treating it as a movie opening, treating it as a years and years long project…
The backlist is not really the bread and butter of Workman; it’s the entree.
