As a freelance book designer/layout artist, I must admit to being shocked how well the freelance game has held up for me in this economy. Makes no diff that the inevitable layoffs of employees seem to have resulted in inevitable contracting out of freelance book design and production work. I guess the first thing this shows is that, despite the slowdown, the economy still chugged along and publishing, in particular, still had tasks that needed to be performed. Minus the bennies and other non-salary expenses incurred by the use of employees, it turns out that freelance help is the logical way to go, I'm pleased to have discovered.

Publishing is gong through revolutionary transformation. This chaos has led to a lot of layoffs, restructuring and changes at publishers of all sizes. Regardless of what is said, these publishers are still putting out as many books as ever. They just don't have the people to market all of them. The emerging areas (eBooks, social networking, digital anything) is one of the areas to learn. Many full-time employees don't have the time nor he exspertise to work on these areas. I feel the central question is -- "how can I add value?"
